Publisher: American Scientific Publishers
Abstract
Focused on how film can be efficient to deliver educational values through Chiaroscuro, this paper shows a new dimension of seeing film as a media that can be equal with human ways of thinking. Both of these elements maximise memory, imagination, attention, emotion, and perception of values. Chiaroscuro is a lighting technique that emphasised in low-key lighting; a contrast boundary between light and dark area that gives influence emotion and cognition of viewers. Using Sang Pencerah film by Hanung Bramantyo as study case, we would discuss the background why Chiaroscuro has a significant influence in developing reflective interpretation and specific value in film. The method of this research was based on Elsaesser and Hagener film theory and Charles S. Peirce’s theory of semiotics. Moreover, through this research, we found that film actually has a ‘form language’ as its own aesthetic language. Going beyond artistic value, Chiaroscuro is able to reach philosophical aspect in life values, such as determination, peacefulness, and so on. Hopefully, this research will be able to contribute in the development of education aspect, especially in film studies.
